Québec commercial solar interconnection FAQ.

What the file must establish

  • Ownership of the equipment, ownership of the building and authority to file the application.
  • AC rating, connection voltage, inverters, protection, transformers and maximum export.
  • Load profile, Rate G or M, measured demand and the self-consumption objective.
  • Studies, distribution costs, testing, compliance report and operating conditions.

Who must own the equipment in a commercial project?

A business customer must own and operate the self-generation equipment. If the business leases the building, Hydro‑Québec states that the building owner must file the application. Responsibilities should therefore be settled before final design.

Do the same standards apply to every commercial project?

No. Standard E.12‑01 governs distributed-generation interconnection generally. Simplified standard E.12‑07 applies to facilities of 100 kW or less using certified inverters on low voltage. Capacity, voltage and operating mode determine the exact path.

What changes above 100 kW?

The project is outside the simplified scope of E.12‑07. More detailed engineering, project-specific protection, telecommunications requirements or distribution work may be required depending on the facility and point of connection.

Does Hydro‑Québec check distribution capacity?

Yes. Hydro‑Québec performs a hosting-capacity review. A high concentration of self-generation can place an application on hold. Complex projects may require an integration study and distribution modifications, with customer approval before costs are incurred.

Is interconnection usually free?

Hydro‑Québec says the large majority of self-generation projects do not incur connection charges. That is not a guarantee: studies, network modifications, metering or special equipment may be charged on a complex project.

Which businesses can use net-metering option I?

Hydro‑Québec states that option I can apply to small-power Rate G and medium-power Rate M customers with maximum self-generation capacity not exceeding 1,000 kW and a renewable source, subject to all other conditions.

When may the building begin operating the system?

After construction, the contractor completes the required tests and submits the verification report. Grid-connected operation begins only after Hydro‑Québec issues formal authorization and all project-specific conditions are satisfied.
